Designing the main site pages.

Postby IV_Warrior » Tue Aug 29, 2006 3:23 am

Ok, so far we've had 2 members say they have HTML experience and could build the main site. I think that's great, now we just need to decide how we want it to look. Hopefully, you two (and if there's anyone else) can split the job up a bit tackling different pages.

I'd like everyone to give some input to how they'd like to see the front page look. Color scheme and stuff like that (after all, this is the group's site, not my personal thing). I like all the banners I've seen so far, hopefully we can find ways to use each of them.

Looking through the suggestions here so far, I think we'll need several pages, linked from the main page. I'd like to see a century club page. It doesn't have to be overly complex, but should reflect honoring those who have reached milestones.

I'd also like a page devoted to listing those who have found one of the Lonesome caches, once I officially get that challenge started. I was thinking something with various cache containers as a background.

We need a page (or 2 seperate pages) listing caching regulations for PA State Parks/Forests (the rules are here on the DCNR's website) and Centre Parks and Rec's rules. Points of contact for those would be nice as well, but I don't know the correct contact for the parks/forests and it varies across the different areas. I did some digging around and found Centre Region Parks and Recreation's geocaching policy. Do we want to copy their stuff directly, or just link to their pages on a "areas that need permits page?

If we're going to do the featured cacher thing, we'll need something for that as well.

Who wants to do what parts? :D I think that's enough to get us started. Obviously, the "main page" will likely be a work in progress as we continue to add other stuff.

Just a thought

Postby HolyCowboys » Tue Aug 29, 2006 1:19 pm

I was just thinking.....scary huh!

I would suggest that we get one overall design before we add any content to the future site. If we have 3 or 4 people working on seperate pages then we will have a confusing design structure. We do want to look good don't we.

Just a thought.
Once we have a final template created then different individules could add the content as needed to a specific area.

Oh, forgot to mention that I would be happy to whip something up...I'll start to build something today and will post a link to it soon . Feel free to add suggestions as the process continuues.

Postby HolyCowboys » Tue Aug 29, 2006 5:10 pm

Ok folks. Here is a template with very minimal content right now. Please keep in mind that most links are not currently active.

I am open to color change, positioning etc. PLease let me know what you think.

It's ok I can take a bash too.

I like it! On my computer though, the navigation links at the top continue on the 2nd line (PA at the end of the 1st line and Parks/Forests on the 2nd). Maybe make it wider?

Changed the design to reflect 800 px in width. Let me know how the links work now for everyone. Other positional issues have now come up. But one thing at a time.

Yeah, that width looks better on my screen now too. Just for reference sake, my resolution is set to 1280x1024

Agreed. It would be much easier to decide on a design before splitting up the page duties. That way we know how the stuff is going to look in that particular design.

I like it so far. It looks a tad narrow on my computer, but I think that's the wide screen monitor. I'm sure as we add a bit and the page extends down farther, it'll work itself out. I'd rather have it look a tad narrow on my screen than look strange on other people's. It does look slightly different in IE than Firefox.

With the Geocaching logo, we have to make sure we comply with Groundspeak's logo useage guidelines. I think we're fine, as long as we add the required text that's listed on that page.

I agree with getting the front page done first before starting the others, but I tossed them in this thread because we'd need links to them from the front page. I don't think all the pages need to look identical, but do think they should all have the same general feel to them.

I'm not sure about the blue background, with the other colors on the page, it almost seems out of place. Perhaps something more "earthy"?

More webpage changes

Postby HolyCowboys » Wed Aug 30, 2006 1:32 pm

The process continues.
Positioning, logo compliance, and color changes made.

Hey I don't mind being the goto guy for the Web changes. It's what I do at work. Ha what's one more site to manage. If people want to adopt a specific page like "Featured cacher" that would be great. Simply provide me with the content including graphics I will post the material.

I would also need access to the primary hosting site. I wont be able to keep the site on my PSU account for to long.

The page looks good with the earth colors. Maybe the page we use with the three landscape banner could be the Lonesome Cache page with a blue background. And the other banner could be used for the Century Club page.

Ok, I am in no way a computer technie but all I see on my page now is a phpbb symbol up in the upper left hand corner. Am I supposed to see anything different?

Andrea,

Currently, development of the new site is being done here. I'm assuming that eventually, things will be moved to http://www.centralpageocachers.org.

While these forums are the main 'working' part of the new site, eventually, they will be just a part of a larger resource.

I'd like to suggest a link to the past "Cacher of the Month" pages, once we have more CotMs.

How about an update on the CPAG web page? I think the PA county challenge cache needs to be included next to the PA DeLorme challenge cache.
